Senior Payroll Specialist

Position Overview: Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Payroll Specialist to manage accurate and timely multi-state payroll while ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. This role will serve as a payroll subject matter expert, resolve complex payroll issues, support audits and reconciliations, and drive process improvements. The ideal candidate is highly detail-oriented, analytical, and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.
 
Key Responsibilities
  • Process bi-weekly, multi-state payroll for hourly and salaried employees
  • Review and audit payroll data, including hours, commissions, bonuses, deductions, garnishments, and taxable benefits
  • Process new hires, terminations, transfers, compensation changes, and other payroll updates
  • Research and resolve payroll discrepancies and employee inquiries
  • Reconcile payroll registers, taxes, benefit deductions, and general ledger accounts
  • Support month-end, quarter-end, and year-end activities, including W-2s and payroll tax reconciliations
  • Ensure compliance with wage and hour laws, payroll tax regulations, garnishments, and internal controls
  • Support payroll audits, including SOX and internal control testing
  • Maintain payroll procedures and identify opportunities for automation and process improvement
  • Assist with payroll integrations related to acquisitions, system conversions, and organizational changes
  • Partner with HR, Accounting, Benefits, Operations, and external vendors to ensure accurate payroll processing
  • Train and mentor payroll team members as needed
 
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, Business, or a related field preferred 
  • 5+ years of progressive payroll experience, including multi-state payroll
  • Strong knowledge of payroll taxes, wage and hour laws, garnishments, and payroll compliance
  • Experience with ADP Workforce Now or a comparable payroll system
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including formulas, PivotTables, and data analysis
  • Strong payroll reconciliation, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail with the ability to manage deadlines and confidential information
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills
  • CPP designation preferred
  • Experience with SOX, payroll implementations, acquisitions, or system conversions is a plus
