Accounting & Finance Director
Position Overview: Our client is seeking an Accounting & Finance Director to serve as a key operational finance leader responsible for overseeing accounting operations, financial reporting, budgeting systems, compliance, internal controls, and organizational financial stewardship. This role partners closely with executive leadership and cross-functional teams to strengthen financial accountability, improve operational rigor, and support strategic decision-making in a mission-driven, multi-department environment.
The ideal candidate combines strong technical accounting expertise with leadership experience, systems thinking, process improvement, and the ability to drive accountability and operational excellence across the organization.
Key Responsibilities

Oversee all accounting operations including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll accounting, grant accounting, and fixed assets

Lead month-end close, journal entries, reconciliations, and financial reporting processes

Ensure compliance with GAAP, audit requirements, grant regulations, and financial policies

Support annual audits, tax filings, and regulatory reporting requirements

Monitor cash flow and maintain banking relationships

Lead budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis processes

Develop financial review tools, reporting processes, and accountability systems across departments

Partner with operational leaders to align financial decisions with organizational goals and staffing models

Strengthen internal controls, financial procedures, and risk mitigation practices

Drive adherence to purchasing procedures, approval workflows, and documentation standards

Supervise and develop finance and accounting staff while fostering accountability and continuous improvement

Identify opportunities for operational efficiencies and scalable financial systems

Serve as a strategic partner to executive leadership on financial planning and organizational sustainability initiatives
Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required; CPA preferred

Minimum 3+ years of accounting or finance leadership experience

Strong expertise in accounting operations, financial reporting, budgeting, and compliance

Experience with audits, internal controls, and financial systems

Experience in nonprofit, public sector, or education finance preferred

Experience with grant accounting and compliance preferred

Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills

Ability to manage multiple priorities and drive operational execution in a fast-paced environment

High attention to detail with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities

Experience building or improving financial systems, processes, and controls preferred
